What are the differences in types of Bibles? KJV, NIV, I think there is something called the Message, etc. Do they all say the same thing? Is it okay to read one that is not the "proper" version? What is the easiest to understand?
I have been thinking about this today. It all confuses me.

The difference is King James is written in terms that we don't use alot today so it's harder to understand......the other translations are just put into everyday terms that we use today so people can understand what it says. It all says the same thing, just put into words that are easier for us to understand that's all. I have the New living translation and it's the easiest for me to understand.
Amanda, the next time you are at a bookstore, pick up one of each of the translations and you will see what I mean.
That is a question to ask my dad about (for those who don't know me/him he has a PhD in Religious Philosophy, actually I am sure that he has many translations and would be happy to share...if you wanted to go up to their house for an evening.
The new ones are definitely easier to read, but we do need to be careful because sometimes words have different meanings now than they did in the past and changing them to modern terms, can possibly add to or lose from the original meaning. A lot of times though in the margins, they will explain what the original text said so you can better understand what it means.
The message for me was too common. It kinda took away from the "message"God is tryingt ot ell me. I have the version Crys uses and I like it. King James Version is fancy but also very respectful, I think. I say read a little of all of them....time permitting SM
